Frances Goldberg Brough

After graduating from Cortland State Teachers College, I wanted to move to California but moved back home because my father told me that nice girls don't live away from home before they get married. So I got married! That lasted for 8 years, but marriage #2 is going on 32 years. I married my husband Walter in 1975. We have two daughters. My oldest is an animal trainer and she is the mother of my two brilliant grandchildren. (Who among us with grandchildren does not make that claim!) My younger daughter is an executive for a toy company that produces and distributes art toys. Walter wrote screen-plays and episodic television during his active career. I went from teaching math to raising children, but always enjoyed working out of the home. While the kids were young, we bought a small mom and pop business that turned out to be a mom business. Pop just wasn't into ironing transfers on tee shirts. He preferred thinking up plots for Mannix, Mission Impossible, Spenser for Hire and other action adventure shows. He was also an avid golfer and rather than being a "golf widow," I took up the game and for the last 30 years, I don’t think I have missed a Tuesday  (Ladies’ Day) on the golf course. I also haven’t missed many Thursdays, Saturdays, and so on. It is my other job!!

However, I have managed to do many different things. Teaching didn't lend itself to Tuesdays off, so I spent some time in banking, office-managed for geologists, assisted in writing living trusts for a legal firm, and finally ended up as Executive Director of a small non-profit organization that serves as a civic think tank for the region in which I live. I have been with the organization for 11 years, the longest I have been on any job (except for golf). I plan to phase myself out in the next couple of years so I will have some more time for – you guessed it – golf.
