Graduating from college in 1961 into a new era (birth control, Kennedy presidency, Peace Corps was the defining moment of our time. But, like the good 1950's girl that I was, I married 10 days after graduation. Fortunately, I made a great choice and we are still together. We moved the day after we married to remotest San Angelo, TX where they thought I had a funny accent and was crazy for walking to the market. Also the bugs were enormous. From there we moved to Wakkanai, Japan, on the Sakhalin Straits. I was one of two western women in the town and lived in the only building with flush toilets.
After that, our life became more ordinary. I worked as a librarian in universities, public libraries and school libraries while Frank taught in colleges and universities in Illinois, New York, and Texas. We raised two sons, now 38 and 36. One lives in Seattle (gives us a great place to visit) and the other lives a mile from us in Virginia with his wife and two daughters. We love having them so close and get to spend a lot of time with them.
We have been going to Mt. Vernon 5 or 6 times a year all these 50 years because my parents continued to live on Devonia Ave. Dad died 3 years ago at 97, and Mom died in August at 95. I am in the process of selling the house. It will be sad to have no reason to walk around Hunts Woods.
