Mary Meyer Rutherford

The year after graduation, 1957, I married John Rutherford.   We have had two daughters, Carol and Catherine, both of whom were born in Mount Vernon Hospital.   John’s job eventually took us away from Westchester County, and we spent the working years in New Jersey, San Francisco, Bucks County, PA., and Charlotte, NC.

We retired in 1995 and moved to St. Simons Island, GA where we spent nine fantastic years, before deciding to move to Windermere, FL. to be nearer to our daughter, Carol, who lives nearby.   Carol has two sons, one of whom is in law school, and the other is an undergraduate.   Our younger daughter, Cathy, lives in Lookout Mountain, TN and has two children, a daughter who is working and a son who is at college in Chattanooga.

I have only been back to my Mt. Vernon neighborhood once since we left the area, but have so many happy memories of my years there.   My interests are quite varied.   I adore gardening travel, reading and most important of all, my family.   I belong to a garden club and PEO, a women’s charitable organization.

Our travels have taken us to many parts of the world, and we often take cruises.   As a family, we are somewhat spread about, but we try to get together each Thanksgiving and Christmas, and always spend a week’s vacation together each summer.   For instance, next June our family will gather near Hell’s Canyon, Idaho for western adventures together.   In 2008 we will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary (God willing!), for which we will go with our daughters and their husbands to Alaska for a tour and cruise.

Of all our blessings, we have been most fortunate to have had happy family life, and I often think of my friends from days at A.B. Davis and Mount Vernon.
