Bernice Silver Tobin

Since graduating from A.B. Davis I followed my dream of becoming an elementary school teacher and attended the State Teachers College at Oswego, NY graduating in June, 1961 with a Bachelor of Science in Education.

After the fanfare of college life passed, I entered my chosen vocation of teaching. My first teaching position was in New City, N Y   teaching third grade. During my first year of teaching I met my husband, Eph, who was an engineer working on Long Island. We married in July, 1963 and moved to Jericho, N Y where I continued teaching the third grade for two more years. In 1965, my husband changed jobs and we moved to Norwalk, Connecticut.

When David, our first child was born in September, 1965 I chose to be a stay-at-home mom. Two years later in 1967 we moved to a home we built in Trumbull, Connecticut. In July, 1968 our second child, Debbie was born. David has gone on to become a lawyer and financial consultant. His wife, Helena, is presently a stay-at-home mom. Debbie is a Registered Dietitian/stay-at-home mom and married to Matthew a lawyer.  I cannot begin to express the pure joy, love and pleasure I derive from our children and five grandchildren.

In 1979, I returned to teaching and spent twenty years teaching first grade in the Trumbull School System, retiring in June 1999. While our children were in college I went back to school and received my Masters Degree in Education. During my teaching career I was very involved in the Early Intervention Program and traveled around the State of Connecticut lecturing on our program. I also was involved in the Student Assistant Team,  mentoring children with problems. I truly enjoyed my teaching years. I knew what really worked in the classroom and what needed to be done to teach the children and their "parents".

Over the years, I have pursed many satisfying interests. My husband and I have been fortunate to travel extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. This has been a terrific experience for the both of us.

The years have come and gone but the memories of Mt. Vernon will always be with me.
